Bio
Hailing from Minneapolis, Babes in Toyland came out of the same hardcore scene that a few years earlier had produced the Replacements and Husker Du. But Babes in Toyland proved to be a more traditional punk band than either of those predecessors. Babes on Spanking Machine and To Mother (a followup EP) helped inspire the nascent riot grrrl movement perhaps even more than former Babes member Courtney Love's far more successful Hole--though they never participated in it directly. Still, it was a surprise when Babes was signed to a major label. But unlike, say, the major-label debut of the Replacements or Husker Du, Fontanelle -- produced by Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo -- finds Babes using the big recording budget to create the trio's most uncompromising effort. Ranaldo does a fantastic job capturing the dissonance in Bjelland's guitar as well as the band's hard-driving rhythm section. On tracks such as "Bruise Violet" and "Handsome and Gretel," Bjelland purrs sweet nothings one minute and howls like a banshee the next. Though angry enough to scare anyone with a dick, Bjelland is never dogmatic on Fontanelle. Instead, she is all feminist rage sans feminism; in short, Fontanelle is great punk rock. The band played Lollapalooza '93 and the UK's Reading Festival multiple years. The critically acclaimed "Nemesisters" was released in '95 with heavy MTV video rotation and some long overdue radio airplay for the band. The band members can still make each other laugh. Hard.

And I think it's time we start getting them down. This page has been boring for too long. Lori's got all the great pictures. If anyone has a spare scanner (and Mac!) they can send her, that would be awesome! Best Polaroid collection in all the world. I've got to go up there this summer ammd scan all those. It's rock history - Lori knows EVERYONE. It was her house that everyone crashed at when they toured through town. So many stories...OK, OK, I'll get on...
David Roth made this. That's all that needs to be said.

I too grew up listening to Babes (as you know M) and spent many an angst-ridden teen evening with Kat's screams, Maureen's twangs and Lori's bangs as the soundtrack. Marvellous.

Listened to your tunes(top 5), very slick, the first thing I feel is a vibe that portrays a come to my show feel and you will get your ass rocked. The slow to picked up tempos. You must be great live. Never was in a punk scene, a lot of my skater friends were. Not that I didn't like it, but was to busy with hard rock back in the day., What I really like is that there is more of a rock feel and not a crazy fast explosion. I love riffs... and hooks... I really dig it, sweet 69 is my fav ...Jostel Hason, ,New song up, like to invite you for a listen....... 'mine to lose' ,,,.. a lyrical journey of my past love lost and trials of addiction, peace and much love Jostel

Stupid me didn't realize at the time what a fantastic band Babes inToyland were. Maybe it's because I wanted to get away from progressive (whatever that means) to pop while you just were reintroducing progressive (whatever that means) to what punk had developed to at this point of time. Which would have been one of the paths punk could have gone, but it decided to disintegrate. As with lots of cool inventions your music presumably was too futuristic to be picked up by some kind of a wave.
